Freegle is a UK-wide umbrella organisation, formed in 2009 by experienced volunteers and members of the free reuse community. The aims of Freegle are:
- Promoting the keeping of usable items out of landfill.
- Promoting and supporting local community groups working in the area of reuse.
- Empowering and supporting volunteers working for local Freegle groups.
- Informing and educating the public about environmental matters related to the reuse and recycling of unwanted usable goods.
- Promoting sustainable waste management practices.
Each Freegle local group is run independently and has affiliated to Freegle UK. The local volunteers who run each group are the official members of Freegle UK. Freegle UK provides central services to these volunteers and their groups.
Freegle UK is an unincorporated association, is registered as a charity with HMRC (ref. XT32865), has a constitution and banks with Unity Trust Bank. Local volunteers have elected a group of national Representatives. Important decisions are made by a poll of all volunteers.
Freegle Limited is an Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community: registration no: 32410R. Freegle Ltd is owned by its members who are volunteers running local groups or helping nationally. The Society is run according to these rules. Each member has one vote at General Meetings. Any financial surplus is reinvested to achieve the objects of the Society. If the Society is dissolved, any remaining assets must go to a similar organisation.
Many Freegle groups were previously affiliated to Freecycle. Unfortunately, the grass roots ethos was gradually eroding and this created an untenable situation for hundreds of volunteers in the UK. After lengthy and patient negotiations with the founder failed, Freegle was formed. We continue to be pleased to welcome new groups into the Freegle family.
We are still really excited to be Freegle! A purely volunteer run movement which values and respects its members and volunteers, in the process continuing to keep usable items in use and out of landfill. It’s a win-win situation for us all.
